Sugar Loaf

High Street North looking towards the Sugar Loaf. When this photo was taken the Anne Marie fashion shop was occupying what was once the Sugar Loaf Tap. This was provided in 1861 as an extension to the exclusive hotel next door, when its owners were required to provide billets for soldiers. Guests had been required to make room for military men, who paid nothing for their beds, at great loss to the inn. The Sugar Loaf Tap was called The Soldiers House when it first opened.
